Town offers bloodwork program for seniors

The mayor and Town Council in conjunction with North Hudson Community Action Corp announced a new weekly program to help seniors with their bloodwork. To assist senior housing residents with having blood drawn for their doctors, phlebotomists will come to Kroll Heights and Impreveduto Towers on Tuesday mornings at 7:30 a.m. to draw blood, beginning Aug. 23.
Elms residents will have blood drawn on Thursday mornings at 7:30 a.m., beginning Aug. 25. Everyone must have a doctor’s prescription for bloodwork.
There will be no charge to the patient but Medicare, Medicaid or insurance will be billed for the service. Seniors are asked to bring their cards with you along with their prescription. A 12-hour fast is usually required. Town residents may also take advantage of this new program by going to one of the senior buildings on the specified day. For more information, call Social Services at 201-330-2014.

Free day of birding and photography

The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission will host a free day of birding and photography. The event takes place Saturday, Aug. 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at DeKorte Park. Sponsored the NJMC and the Bergen County Audubon Society (BCAS), the day begins at 8:30 a.m. with a pair of 90-minute bird walks around the one-square-mile park. In the afternoon, Karlson will lead an informal seminar on how to improve your birding skills and host an hour-long photography workshop with Lloyd Spitalnik, another noted nature photographer. NJMC naturalists have lowered the water levels in the Shorebird Pool at DeKorte Park to make sure there are plenty of mudflats and shallows to attract shorebirds, herons and egrets. The park, the home of the NJMC, includes several trails that offer great views of the mudflats and tidal basins.
Visitors can come for a portion of the program or stay all day. Registration is encouraged. To register for the Kevin Karlson programs, contact Don Torino of the BCAS at greatauk4@aol.com or 201-230-4983. Directions to DeKorte Park are available in the left-hand column at www.meadowblog.net.
