Construction worker dies from fall

A construction worker who was repairing a building on 70th Street died after a three-story fall last week.
The incident happened while repairs were being made at an apartment building at 81 70th St. in Guttenberg on Tuesday, Aug 9 at around 12:30 p.m. Police believe that the worker fell roughly 30 feet while repairing a railing.
Police alleged that someone was having the building repaired without the necessary permits.
“He was doing the right thing but he was doing was it the wrong way,” said Captain Joel Magenheimer of the Guttenberg Police Department.
Following an investigation, the building was condemned, as police felt that it was unsafe for residents. The residents are currently residing in a hotel which is being paid for by the landlord.
The worker’s name has not been released.
“An engineer is supposed to go to the building to see if it’s safe or isn’t safe,” said Magenheimer, who added, “It’s deteriorating.”
