Come fly with me

On a warm and windy evening, the Weehawken waterfront park filled up with kids and parents while the skies soared with a variety of kites. The kite designs this past Monday, Aug. 8 ranged from the traditional diamond shape to ones with faces of SpongeBob Squarepants and Yoda.
This summer, the Weehawken recreation staff, led by Kate McMahon and Donna Daly, looked to make events entertaining and fun for families in Weehawken.

“It’s a beautiful experience,” said Dominick Facchini, who brought his grandchildren, 5-year-old Nick and 3-year-old John. “The most important part is that the [grandchildren] are moving and having a good time.”
Enza and Morris Scardigno brought along their two boys.
“This is perfect,” said Enza Scardigno. “We tried to fly kites down the shore before but it is not like this night.”
Michael Facchini, 9, said, “All the kites are big and cool.” Younger brother Vito, 7, summed up the evening by saying it was “super cool!”

A whole lot of kites

If a kid did not bring a kite, the recreation department was ready to supply one.
“It’s always great that Weehawken has so many activities for the kids to come out and play,” said Meg Carson, who came with her son Robert, 5, daughter Daisy, 2, and husband Rob.
“It’s a great event to get all the families together,” Rob Carson.
