State tells WNY school board prez to step down

WEST NEW YORK — The Advisory Committee on Outside Activities of Judiciary Employees under the Supreme Court of New Jersey released a letter on Thursday ordering Cosmo Cirillo, president of the West New York Board of Education and secretary of the West New York Alcohol Beverage Control, to resign from those positions.

The letter stated, “Kindly be advised that the Advisory Committee determined that these outside activities are not permitted by the Code of Conduct. The committee reasoned that the nature of these activities present an unavoidable conflict with the Code and your Judiciary position. Therefore, at your earliest convenience, please tender your letter of resignation from both positions and provide a copy to the court administrator.”

Cirillo was appointed to the board a year ago by then-Mayor Sal Vega at the age of 23. He was appointed the town’s deputy clerk soon after that.

Vega was replaced in May by Mayor Felix Roque, who has challenged several of Vega’s school board appointments.

More details will be released as they become available.
