A funeral service was held Aug. 2 for Joan A. Smith. She passed away July 29, at Harbor View Nursing Home after a long illness. Born in Jersey City, she was a lifelong resident. Joan was employed as a crossing guard at the corner of JFK Boulevard and Van Winkle Avenue (St. John’s School) for 30 years, retiring in 2005. Predeceased by her husband Thomas J. Sr. and her daughter Deborah Smith, Joan is survived by her son Thomas J. Jr. and his wife JoAnn Caiola-Smith and their children, Angela and Eric. She is the sister of Helen Gillen, Walter (Sonny) Ryan, the late Dolly Szymanski, Edna Hendricks, Edward and Anne Ryan. Services arranged by the McLaughlin Funeral Home, Jersey City.
