A celebration of the life of Dr. John A. Effenberger has been held. He died at home on June 1. He was born in Jersey City to Francis Effenberger and Lucille Agacinski Effenberger. A first generation American, he grew up in Bayonne and lived in Bedford, N.H. for his last 27 years. John received his bachelor’s degree from Fordham University where he was a member of the track team. Subsequently, he studied under Dr. French at Iowa State University and was awarded a Ph.D. in chemistry. Following graduation, he worked for E.I. DuPont in Wilmington, Del., developing architectural applications for Teflon before moving to Bennington, Vt. to work at CHEMFAB. During his lengthy career he patented a great many innovative products and applications.
He was the recipient of the first Plunkett Award, which recognizes those who contribute important new products using Teflon. He continued to consult with clients in Germany and Turkey after his retirement from CHEMFAB. John spent many retirement hours working on complex mathematical and chemical formulas, doing crossword puzzles, playing piano and exploring country roads. He enjoyed cooking, eating, and spending time with friends and colleagues.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Kathy Kennedy Effenberger; daughters Lisa Phifer of Chester Springs, Pa., Julie McLagan of New York, Michael Effenberger of Dover, N.H., Kristian Evans of San Anselmo, Calif., Sean Evans of Wolcott, Vt., and Matthew Evans of Bedford, N.H. He was fondly known as Papa John, teller of stories, to his five grandsons and one granddaughter. He is also survived by sisters Joan Effenberger of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Janet Cotter of Bethlehem, Pa., and brother Frank. A second cousin, Barbara Beeman, and many nieces and nephews also survive.
