Popcorn and pop-sipping

Two movies are left in this summer’s series of free movies on the West New York waterfront.
The films have run on four Fridays in July at Mc El Downey Field between 61st and 62nd streets, along Boulevard East. They start at 6:30 p.m.
The events will include free refreshments like hot dogs, ice cream, and popcorn, as well as live music and dancing before the movie.
According to West New York Department of Public Affairs Commissioner FiorD’Aliza Frias’ office, the movies were chosen by the staff members because of their family-friendly content.

“The Karate Kid” is a remake of the 1984 movie.

All attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets and chairs. In the event of inclement weather a movie will be pushed forward to the following Friday.

‘Rango’

“Rango” will be shown on Friday, July 22. It’s an animated cartoon starring Johnny Depp as a pet chameleon stranded in the desert after his cage was thrown from his owner’s station wagon.
The movie takes the viewer on a journey into an old Western town inhabited by a village of animals seeking a solution to their water drought.
Rango tries to find his niche in life by stepping out of his comfort zone to better understand the meaning of life and himself.
Isla Fisher plays Bean, an Iguana who befriends Rango in the desert.
According to the movie-reviewing website Rotten Tomatoes, Rango is rated very high as a great animated film and an audience pleaser. The movie was released in theatres March 4, 2011 and grossed $123.5 million in the box office. The DVD was released for sale in the U.S. on July 15.

‘Karate Kid’ remake

“The Karate Kid” is a remake of the 1984 movie. The new version introduces a single mom moving to a new community with her only son. In 2010 version, little Jaden Smith, son of famous actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, plays Dre Parker, who moves from Detroit to Beijing with his mother Sherry, played by Taraji. P. Henson. He later befriends martial arts expert Mr. Han, played by Jackie Chan, after he is beat up by the school bully.
As in the original movie, this film takes a young man through a journey of martial arts training to develop self defense techniques, a better self image, and more respect for others.
The movie was released in theatres June 11, 2010 and grossed $176.6 million at the box office.
