Man jumps to death on Broadway

An unidentified man jumped off a roof to his death at 805 Broadway at about 11:21 p.m. on July 5.
A police spokesperson said that witnesses on the scene saw the man jump. No reason has yet been discovered and the matter has been turned over to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Homicide Division for investigation.
Police said the victim appeared to be still alive when the patrol arrived, but when McCabe Ambulance arrived a short time later, EMTs could find no signs of life.
A report of injuries at the scene said the victim had suffered a broken neck, a broken ankle, and injuries to the chest. The Hudson County Medical Examiner was called to the scene and took possession of the body. The victim had no identification on him, the police said.

Disturbance leads to drug arrest

Tyrone A. Baskin, 41, of Bayonne was charged with resisting arrest and drug-related offenses after he allegedly confronted police near the Lord Avenue public housing complex on July 4.
A police spokesperson said officers were called to the area on the report of a large group of people – as many as 60 – creating a disturbance near the complex. As officers started to disperse the crowd, Baskin allegedly tried to incite the group to turn against the police.
The officers apparently told him to leave after determining he was not a resident of the complex. The police said he started to walk away, but stopped, then came back to confront them again, “yelling” and “acting violently,” according to the police report.
At this point, police arrested him for disorderly conduct, and he allegedly resisted being handcuffed. The police said a search discovered a small yellow bag containing smaller bags with suspected marijuana – except there was a smell of ether, an indication that the marijuana might be laced with the powerful hallucinogenic drug PCP. One of the police officers who handled the contents was treated for exposure.
Baskin was charged with possession of PCP, possession with intent to distribute, and possession with intent to distribute within 500 feet of public housing. He was also found to have a warrant from Bayonne for $1,000 in unpaid fines and a warrant from Superior Court. He was sent to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny.

Gunshots into an apartment with kids in it

Police are investigating a shooting that occurred on July 3 at 3:52 a.m. at 729 Avenue A., saying that someone fired into an apartment occupied by one adult and three kids, ages 1, 2, and 3 years old. The people were unharmed, a police spokesperson said, but the police found shell casings and are currently seeking the person or persons responsible.

Three men charge in motorcycle theft

Anthony Sharpe, 20, of Jersey City, Victor Gonzalez, 30, of Bayonne, and Joseph J. Mari, Jr., 26, of Bayonne, were charged with attempting to steal a motorcycle from an alley way on Avenue B near 49th Street on July 2.
The three men allegedly tried to put a motorcycle into the back of a pickup truck and police arrived after a call from a witness.
Sharpe faces additional charges for resisting arrest, aggravated assault, and obstruction of a governmental function when he allegedly struggled and struck a police officer in an attempt to escape the scene. Two vehicles used in the alleged theft were also impounded, a police spokesperson said.

Motor vehicle stop leads to drug arrest

Robert Correa, 23, of Bayonne, was charged with possession of marijuana and outstanding warrants after a motor vehicle stop on July 1.
A police spokesperson said an officer noticed cigar wrappers in the front seat of the car and at the same time detected a strong odor of raw marijuana. Hollowed-out cigars are sometimes used to smoke marijuana. The officer called in a K-9 unit, and the drug sniffing-dog, Dylan, indicated there was marijuana in the padding of the passenger seat.
A search, police said, uncovered eight zip lock plastic bags containing suspected marijuana. Correa was also found to have an outstand warrant for unpaid finds of $439 due to the Jersey City Municipal Court.
He was sent to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny.
