Dear Editor:
Since moving from Manhattan to West New York about 6 years ago, I had been consistently impressed by the care & attention shown to the 9/11 memorial fountain & playground area at the north end of Donnelly Park. This year for some reason, the area clearly needed some grounds keeping, maintenance, and police attention (primarily after dark) following the Memorial Day holiday. I sent an email via the Town’s website and heard back the next morning from the Mayor’s office & Town Clerk, assuring me that steps were being taken. Leaving for work a few hours later I saw grounds keeping & maintenance crews already hard at work around the fountain, and the work continued all week. Walking through the park after dark I noted a visible (and customarily alert) WNYPD presence. Over the course of that week I heard from the Mayor’s office again, the Parks Commissioner, and the Police Commander via email, updating me on work being done and safety initiatives already under way. A few years ago, as a new arrival, I would have been pleasantly surprised by this kind of prompt and courteous attention from our Town’s officials. I’m happy to see that Mayor Roque and his Commissioners appear committed to maintaining the very high standards of public service set in years past.
