Kennedy Dancers perform Thursday nights at Owen Grundy Pier


Simmer is here soon and what better way to spend your summer nights than at the Jersey City Summer Dance Fest Series on the breezy Jersey City Waterfront! The Summer Dance Fest will be held on the J. Own Grundy Pier- right outside the NJ Transit Path station- in front of the breathtaking backdrop of the Manhattan Skyline and will feature performances by The Kennedy Dancers, Hudson County’s premier dance company now celebrating its 25 Anniversary, every Thursday night from July 14-August 11, 2011 from 6:30-8:30pm. Every performance is free and open to the public and sponsored by the Jersey City Division of Cultural Affairs. Before each performance, from 6:00-6:30 pm the audience is invited to warm-up with the dances with a free mini Zumba class!
Dancers from The Kennedy Dancers Professional Company and the Inner City Youth Junior Dance Company will be presenting repertory choreography by Artistic Director, Diane Dragone and world-renowned choreographer Sean Curran. The Kennedy Dancers Professional Company is composed of eight dancers chosen by Ms. Dragone for their technical and performance abilities. They perform the work of Ms. Dragone and other well-known choreographers such as Sean Curran annually in New York and in Jersey City. The Professional Company is comprised of Julianna Kenworthy- BFA in Dance Choreography from Arizona State University, worked with and performed for Delfos Danza Contemporania of Mazatlan, Yin Mei, Randy James, White Wave, Kathleen Dyer with KDNY, VISSI Dance Theater; Aaron Atkins- BFA in Dance, performed repertory by Martha Graham and Horton, Classical Contemporary Ballet Theatre; Natasha Carles- Novikov- Dance Therapy major in Marymount Manhattan College; Juan Espinosa- graduate of Marymount Manhattan College, performed with VISSI Dance Theater; Sarah Gordon- Pilobolus, Keen Dance Theatre, Paul Taylor Dance Company; and Kristin VanDeventer- BFA in Dance from Montclair State University.
On the bill are “La Dolce Vita,” Dragone’s valetine to Italy; “My Obsession with Cats,” a series of dances inspired by her love of all things feline; “Meadowlands Serenade,” dedicated to the migratory birds that make their temporary home in the Secaucus Meadowlands, “On the VoTech Bus,” a comedic pantomime dance parodying the antics of VoTech students on the school bus, and “Force of Circumstance,” an abstract choreography by master choreographer Sean Curran. Also showing in honor of the 10 anniversary of 9/11, The Kennedy Dancers will end each show with Ms. Dragone’s patriotic “Tribute to 9/11.”
