Party lines may affect Hoboken swearing in today

HOBOKEN – The City Council swearing-in ceremony on Friday morning was to mark the
beginning of a new era in Hoboken politics for Mayor Dawn Zimmer. Recent Councilwoman Jennifer Giattino’s win over longtime Councilman Nino Giacchi gives Zimmer’s allies a 5-4 edge on the governing body.
The swearing-in ceremony was expected to have a special guest: Republican Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno.
But some said today that Guadagno would not swear in all of the members.
“Not me; I’m a Democrat,” said one council member when asked about potentially
being sworn in by the lieutenant governor. Sources say at least three of the council members will be sworn in by someone
other than Guadagno.
Zimmer, herself a Democrat, has supported Republican Gov. Chris Christie recently in a letter to editor to

about the state’s recent pension reforms, as well as in an
appearance in Trenton this week during a signing for the governor’s toolkit
