A funeral service took place April 9 at St. Michael’s Methodist Church, Jersey City, for Joseph Butler. He passed away April 2. Born in Pineville, S.C., after his service in World War II and discharge from the Army as a PFC, Joseph moved to Newark then settled in Jersey City. He worked for Pathmark as a receiving manager for 29 years until his retirement. He most enjoyed holding court with family and friends and sharing stories about his life and travels. Joseph was predeceased by his wife, Lillie Mae; parents, Samuel and Ellen Butler (Anna Oliver); brother Benjamin Mazyck and sisters, Victoria Washington, Lillie Mae J. Shine and Elizabeth Gailliard; daughter Izora (Gerri) Rogers and son Clarence (Curtis) Ravenell. He is survived by his children, Stella Banks, O’Deana Fregia, Lavenia Phillips, Joe Ann, Duane, Dwight, Billiejean Butler Dickson (Audies), Holli Pouncel and Greselda Butler; sisters, Wilhelmina (Flossie) Rogers and Anna Lee Oliver; 16 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
