Residents flee Avenue C building at sign of smoke
Tenants of an apartment building at 47 Ave. C fled when a contractor working on the roof of a second floor apartment reported seeing smoke.
The fire department arrived at about 11:23 a.m. to see smoke billowing from the second and third floors of the three-story building.
Fire Chief Greg Rogers said firefighters advanced multiple fire hoses and opened the front exterior wall to extinguish flames traveling in the enclosed section.
“Firefighters stopped the fire from extending throughout the building,” Rogers said.
The fire damage was confined to the front wall. The remaining structure suffered varying degrees of smoke and water damage.
“The fire was declared under control in 22 minutes, with no reported civilian or firefighter injuries. The building contained three units,” Rogers said.
The Fire Investigator’s initial determination was that the fire was accidental, the result of a roofer’s torch used to heat roofing material.
The police department, EMS, and the building department were at the scene. Custody of the building was returned to the owner, and tenants were permitted to reoccupy.
Bayonne waste management company seeks Chapter 11 protection
Nacierma Industries, a Bayonne-based solid waste company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, claiming it owns $11.9 million to creditors and owes the state $152,000 in fines imposed by the Hudson County Improvement Authority.
Hudson roads need $18 million in repairs
A state report released last week from the state Department of Transportation said that state roads in Hudson County need about $18 million in repairs. This would include work to Route 1&9, as well as approaches to the Holland Tunnel. While Governor Chris Christie has set aside $284 million for road projects across the state in the 2012 budget, local officials claim much of this money is going to new projects, not maintaining existing infrastructure.
Casino Night held to benefit cancer research
The Madeline Fiadini Lo Re Foundation for Cancer Prevention is holding its third annual Casino Night on Friday, April 15, in Our Lady of Assumption’s auditorium, located at 23rd Street and Kennedy Boulevard.
The cost is $100 per person, which includes $50 in casino chips, food, desserts, and beverages. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. Attendees must be 18 years or older.
