Letter to freeholders asks them to hold off on $199M school project

HUDSON COUNTY — While the county freeholders have proposed building a new $199 million campus for the Hudson County Schools of Technology — the county public high school — most of the mayors in the county have said they should hold off until they know the tax impact.
The plan is to someday close the current North Bergen and Jersey City campuses and open a new one in Secaucus. A satellite office might stay in Jersey City.
The plan would use state funding and funding from possibly selling the other facilities. But the funding has not been secured.
According to a report this weekend on NJ.com, the mayors of eight towns sent a letter to the freeholders saying the costs of the project could “adversely impact” the towns’ requests for their own federal, state, and county grants. They also are concerned about the impact on county taxes if other funding was not found.
