Two arrests in one day

While March 2 may have been just an average Wednesday for many residents, that wasn’t the case for Derek Hewlett, according to police.
The 30-year-old Scranton, Pa. man was arrested and charged with theft of services on the morning of March 2, and then arrested later that day after an alleged altercation downtown. The second time, he was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct, according to police.
Police were called to the 600 block of Park Avenue after an alleged taxi dispute, according to a police report, at approximately 3 a.m. on March 2. Police say they spoke to the New York City taxi driver who alleged that Hewlett did not have $47 for a cab fare for a trip from the Bronx to Hoboken. The driver said Hewlett was “heavily intoxicated” and told him a friend who lives nearby would take care of the cab fare. However, when police rang the doorbell of the friend, the man stated he did not want to get involved and would not pay the fare. Hewlett was arrested for theft of services and later released.
At 11:24 p.m. on the same day, police were called to a bar on the 300 block of Washington Street due to a report of a disorderly person. After police arrived, they did not see anyone outside but did speak with the establishment’s bouncer, who said a young, white male just entered and appeared to be intoxicated and bothering people.
Police say the man was trying to find a taxi to Scranton, Pa., and they determined he was heavily intoxicated, according to the report. So police called the Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corp., at which point Hewlett tried to re-enter the bar, according to police. Hewlett then allegedly fled from police officers, but was caught near Bloomfield and Third streets, where police wrestled him onto a parked car, according to a report. Hewlett was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
