Hoboken budget workshops scheduled
HOBOKEN – After Mayor Dawn Zimmer introduces the 2011 budget on March 2 at the City Council meeting, city directors will be questioned on their spending plans for the current year in two public budget workshops.
The workshops are scheduled for March 9 and March 23 at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 94 Washington St.
The dates were set at a City Council finance committee meeting last week, according to a release. After the introduction of the budget, the council has the responsibility to review and amend the budget before it is adopted.
Councilman Michael Russo, the chair of the Revenue and Finance Committee, invited the public to attend and comment at the workshops in a press release.
“We want to make sure that the public is heard on the budget and that whatever eventually comes out of the council will represent their best interests,” Russo said in a press release.
Before the budget is passed, the city is required by state law to hold a public hearing which cannot occur until 28 days after the budget has been introduced. No date has formally been announced for the public hearing. For more, keep watching HudsonReporter.com.
Liberty Humane Society has day in court; suit seeks ‘humane’ euthanasia
JERSEY CITY, HOBOKEN AND BEYOND — The board of the Liberty Humane Society and its former and current managers planned to meet former society volunteers in court on Feb. 23, according to legal documents. The suit by the volunteers charges LHS with racketeering, extortion, gross mismanagement, misuse of public funds, intimidating critics, and killing adoptable animals.
The suit caps an ongoing dispute that was set off last year when the shelter board resigned after accusing shelter employees of fiscal mismanagement and using a “no-kill” policy that the board said was bankrupting the shelter.
For their part, the LHS has filed a defamation suit against two volunteers. LHS accused them of using a Facebook page to intimidate shelter board members and employees.
A different activist was arrested for the same charge.
The suit against the LHS to be heard this week seeks to remove board members and other officials and to implement a “humane euthanasia policy.” For more coverage, see an upcoming edition of the Jersey City Reporter.
UC announces special screening of award-winning film ENTRE NOS
UNION CITY – Mayor Brian P. Stack, the Union City Board of Commissioners, and Indiepix Films announced that the city of Union City will present a screening of the multi-award winning feature film ENTRE NOS today (Thursday, Feb. 24) at 7 p.m. at the Union City Performing Arts Center, 2500 Kennedy Blvd.
The film is written and directed by Paola Mendoza and Gloria LaMorte, and stars Ms. Mendoza. Gloria LaMorte is a resident of Union City, where she resides with her husband and ENTRE NOS producer Joseph LaMorte.
Admission is free, and free parking is available at the 23rd Street Parking Deck located on 23rd Street between Summit and Kerrigan avenues.
