High property taxes means only basics for me

Dear Editor:
Well, where does one begin? In reference to comments made by the current mayor of our community stating that I am, somehow, a constant complainer in reference to issues involving our great city of Union City…
Let me make one important fact crystal clear. I, and I alone, somehow manage to pay my extremely high property taxes on time.
I know the overwhelming number of people in our city do agree that it is important to try and conduct an informative dialogue as far as issues that affect all of us in Union City are concerned.
However, far too many of us are aware in Union City that if someone presents an alternative opinion on something that runs counter with the current administration at City Hall – Watch out! They don’t like that!
It’s like having a control freak run our city. For example, I don’t think it’s asking too much for our public safety director to finally start acting like one and take on our regional fire department instead of constantly stating “I can’t stop them from increased expenses because of the other communities involved.”
In extremely difficult economic times, this ostrich in the sand routine is unacceptable.
In reference to the revenue and finance commissioner, many people in Union City have the opinion that she should not hold the position.
There are those of us who are sincerely concerned that this situation could affect our city’s bond rating.
I do have fond memories from the time I was our city’s senior citizen director. I have never been ashamed that I left that position after nearly three years because, through no fault of my own, it was determined not to call a civil service exam in reference to the position remaining part time.
What our current mayor fails to acknowledge is that shortly after I ended my work as senior citizen director, I was rehired by our great city as a part time aide to then Commissioner Ron Dario.
That position ended at the same time Mr. Dario left public office in our community.
And finally when someone says something about sour grapes, I wish I could afford to buy any kind of grape. However with these extremely high property taxes, it’s only the basics for me.
Let’s hope that in 2011 things begin moving in the right direction for all of us.
