Weehawken’s winter waterfront

River Road divides two neighborhoods in Weehawken — stately old mansions on the cliffs above and new construction rising on the waterfront below, where once were derelict piers and the ghostly remnants of the town’s industrial past.
A visit to Weehawken’s waterfront on a sunny winter day is a study in color and line — snow brilliantly white reflecting the sun, and the sky and water brilliantly blue. The Lincoln Tunnel helix, the harsh metal stairway leading up to Boulevard East, and the glass and steel of the Port Imperial ferry terminal form a landscape of stark geometric beauty.
Go to the terminal at dusk and you’ll find it bustling with commuters enjoying a drink at the bar while watching the light from the setting sun reflected in the skyscrapers across the water.
