Sacco: Senate Dems want to roll back Turnpike tolls
Senate Transportation Committee Chairman Nicholas Sacco (D-Hudson/Bergen) and Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester/Cumberland/Salem) said they will try to roll back a toll increase that was intended to help pay for the Access to the Region’s Core tunnel project, which has since been cancelled by Gov. Christopher Christie.
The toll increases were estimated to make an average trip on the New Jersey Turnpike go up by 50 cents in 2008, with an additional 90 cent increase to begin in 2012.
$1.25 million was to be generated from these the Turnpike and Garden State Parkway tolls for the creation of the tunnel. Recently, Christie announced that he planned to transfer these funds to the state’s transportation fund.
“It’s disingenuous for the Governor to, on one hand, cancel the ARC tunnel project, and on the other, continue the funding source for the ARC tunnel into perpetuity to pay for his own transportation projects,” said Sacco.
The bill, S-2636, will direct the New Jersey Turnpike Authority to adopt a resolution to scale back toll increases on these roads. The bill will be considered by the Senate Transportation Committee.
“He should go to the Turnpike Authority,” said Sacco. “He shouldn’t be taking money earmarked for another project that is no longer there and spending it on another project.”
North Bergen Little League registration open
The North Bergen Little League, which is open to children from both North Bergen and Guttenberg, is taking registrations now through February.
Registration is held at 1210 76th St. on Fridays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fee is $25 per child and $35 after Feb. 21.
