HOBOKEN — The Hoboken City Council was expected to choose a new council president and vice president on Wednesday evening at their first meeting of the new year. It has been rumored since November that the new president of the council would be Councilwoman Beth Mason, but she has not confirmed these rumors.
Rules for choosing a new president were amended by a new council majority that often sides against Mayor Dawn Zimmer. Mason is a Zimmer critic.
The issue of recreation fees for children was also was expected to return to the agenda. The new majority wants to eliminate the $25 fee for participation in the town’s recreation programs, while the Zimmer administration said keeping the fee is good policy.
Councilman Peter Cunningham, a Zimmer ally, released a statement Wednesday asking residents to come out in support of the fee, which he called a “fiscally prudent measure” passed last year. Cunningham said in the statement that it was sent out in response to a message from Michele Russo, Councilman Michael Russo’s mother, which urged residents to come and speak out.
Other items on the agenda include extending appointments of special legal counsel and appointing McGuire Associates as Licensed Tax Appraiser for a one year term.
