Weehawken police issue holiday crime prevention tips

Dear Editor:
Here are some special Weehawken Police holiday crime prevention tips: While at home:
• Remember to lock all ground-floor windows, rear and cellar doors
• Screens on ground level windows or fire escapes are not a deterrent –
keep these windows closed and locked
• Install motion-detection lighting in backyards and driveways
• Leave a hallway or entry light on
• Immediately report suspicious persons or activity to police
• Don’t open your door to strangers
• Going away? Have a neighbor check your home, collect mail, circulars, and newspapers
In your vehicles, don’t let your car become a victim of a crime of opportunity!
• Lock your car, even if you are leaving it for only a few moments –
do not leave your car running unattended
• Never leave the registration or insurance cards in the car, as this could contribute to identity theft
• Take valuables with you
• Don’t leave gifts, wrapped or unwrapped, visible in your car
• Don’t leave items such as GPS devices, laptop computers, iPods, portable video players, and related articles in sight
Credit cards and Identity Theft:
• Keep credit cards secure in a safe place until you need them
• Never keep PIN numbers with your credit or debit cards
• Shred or destroy unneeded statements containing your personal information
• Monitor your accounts for unauthorized activity and report any to your bank or card company immediately
• Never give your personal information to phone solicitors
• Never leave purses or wallets unattended on countertops for even a moment
Have a happy and safe holiday!
