HOBOKEN – Board of Education Vice President Theresa Minutillo said on Tuesday night that she expects a lawsuit against the county superintendent and the state to be filed by the end of the week. The board hopes the legal action will force the hand of the county superintendent and state to make a decision either approving or disapproving a proposed contract for the final candidate for Hoboken’s superintendent position, Dr. Mark Toback.The Hoboken Board of Education would like to hire a superintendent before Interim Superintendent Peter Carter leaves his office at the end of January.
The board says they haven’t received the necessary response from higher levels of government either approving or disapproving the proposed contract for Toback.
The state has stopped county superintendents from approving contracts due to a push for proposed salary caps on superintendents.
“We must know if [the contract] is acceptable,” Minutillo said on Tuesday night. If the contract is unacceptable, the board would like to know so they can continue with negotiations and go back to the drawing board. The terms of the proposed deal have not been disclosed.
The board did not take public comments during the meeting on Tuesday evening regarding the superintendent situation, but Minutillo told the crowd to “disregard ridiculous rumors” about what the new superintendent will be paid.
