Holiday tree lighting to take place Dec. 5

Weehawken’s holiday tree lighting will take place Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at Weehawken Town Hall, 400 Park Ave. All are welcome to come and enjoy caroling by the Weehawken grammar schools.

Roosevelt School Choir to sing for residents Dec. 8

The Weehawken Roosevelt School Choir will be entertaining Weehawken residents on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Join the choir in the Community Room at 525 Gregory Ave. from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and at the Senior Nutrition Center from 11 a.m. to noon for light refreshments and some holiday sounds of the season. Weekenders offer trip to ‘South Pacific’ musical

The Weehawken Weekenders are planning their first theater trip of the new year. Join them on Thursday, Jan. 27 for the NJPAC presentation of Roger’s and Hammerstein’s classic musical “South Pacific.” Ticket price of $60 per person includes transportation from Pathmark lot. CASA welcomes donations for holiday toy drive

Hudson County CASA will be celebrating the holiday season by holding a toy drive for abused and neglected children in Hudson County.
CASA is an independent non-profit organization committed to advocating for the best interest of children in foster care. Volunteers get involved in advocating for the county’s hundreds of foster children.

SERVPRO to sponsor holiday toy drive

SERVPRO of Hoboken and Union City will sponsor a holiday toy drive in partnership with the New Jersey Apartment Association’s 13th Annual Holiday Party, which will benefit over 1,000 underprivileged children from area schools.
Beginning on Monday, Nov. 22 through Friday, Dec. 10, those interested in participating in the toy drive can do so by donating a new, unwrapped toy to SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City’s main office, located at 51 Fairmont Ave. in Jersey City between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Hudson View Carolers to perform in JC Dec. 3

Union City’s Hudson View Carolers, “We Are the World” ensemble, led by Chimene Petitt, will be performing their holiday caroling on Friday, Dec. 3 at the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery Christmas Tree Lighting. Their next stop will be the White House on Thursday, Dec. 9 where they will sing for President Obama and the nation at the National White House Christmas Tree Lighting.

Watercolors, pastels on display at NJMC Flyway Gallery

The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission’s Flyway Gallery will host an exhibit of watercolors and pastels by local artist Mark de Mos and his students during December and January. The show, “Mark de Mos and Friends,” runs from Tuesday, Dec. 7 to Friday, Jan. 28. A reception for the artists is scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12.
De Mos is a member of several art associations, including the Allied Artists of America, the New Jersey Pastel Society and the Essex Watercolor Society. His paintings have won dozens of awards, been featured in several magazines and books, and been displayed in galleries.

Author Scott Weidensaul to speak at DeKorte

On Monday, Dec. 6, prize-winning nature author Scott Weidensaul will give a free talk, “Against All Odds – Miracles of Bird Migration,” in DeKorte Park, Lyndhurst, at 7:30 p.m. in the Meadowlands Environment Center auditorium.
The talk, hosted by N.J. Meadowlands Commission and sponsored by the Bergen County Audubon Society, will explore the wonder and mechanics of migration, and the simple ways that humans can help at a time when the populations of many migratory birds are in drastic decline.

The Third Annual Legends Ball to be held Dec. 8

The Third Annual Legends Ball, sponsored by the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce, will be held at The Westin Jersey City Newport on Wednesday, Dec. 8. More then 250 guests will join the organization’s board of directors to honor three distinguished business and education leaders for their long term contributions to the business and cultural life of Hudson County. The honorees are Frank Gargiulo, Dr. Carlos Hernandez, and Bob Hurley, Sr.
Chaired by Sharon Ambis-Pizzutiello, marketing director of The Jersey Journal, and Daryl Harrison Rand, of HarrisonRand Advertising, the event promises to exceed the previous year’s Legends Balls.
The Hudson County Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1888 by the burgeoning business community of Hudson County. During its 125 year history, the county-wide organization has served a diverse set of business and professional interest with support of members representing each of the county’s communities. In the last year, the chamber has reorganized, naming a new president to lead the organization through the dramatic changes and growth in Hudson.

Foundation announces scholarship for college-level Hispanic students

The Hispanic Business Council Scholarship Foundation of NJ, Inc. (HBCSF) announces that applications are now being accepted for the annual scholarship and book stipend awards for current college and college-bound Hispanic students for the 2011-2012 school term.
Open to all N.J. residents of Hispanic heritage, the application can be accessed through www.hbcsf.org. Applications and all required information must be postmarked by Monday, Feb. 28, 2011. Scholarships of up to $4,000 each will be disbursed directly to the college or university of the student’s choice during the 2011-2012 school term. HBCSF also awards $1,000 book stipends.
Interviews and the final award selection will be completed by the end of March and the scholarships will be presented at the Foundation’s 20th Annual Scholarship Gala on Thursday, May 12, 2011.
