HOBOKEN — The Corner Cars will continue to have reserved spots on the streets of Hoboken for at least another 200 days.
After the administration of Mayor Dawn Zimmer pushed the new council majority, currently aligned against her on many issues, to pass an ordinance which would allow the cars to have reserved spots throughout the entirety of the Corner Cars program, the council voted by resolution to continue to reserve the spots for 200 days.
The program allows residents to rent Hertz cars hourly that are parked on the street.
Councilman Michael Russo, who proposed the change from the original resolution which called for a 90-day extension, said the resolution was amended to be in effect for 200 days so the council can see how the program works throughout the entirety of the winter, when cars become ‘snowed in.’
But an ordinance to permanently establish spots failed on a 5-4 vote.
Parking and Transportation Director Ian Sacs said that the resolution calls for temporary reserving of the spots, but he believes it’s time to make the reservation of the spots permanent by way of an ordinance.
