Hassan Ahmad, 29, of West New York, was arrested this week and charged with receiving stolen property and hindering arrest after police traced a fingerprint on a stolen vehicle to him.
According to Commander of the Detective Bureau Lt. Frank Cannella, Police Officer Anthony Sirri pulled over Ahmad in a blue Honda on Oct. 7 for allegedly not wearing a seatbelt. According to police, Ahmad allegedly said his name was “Hasan Diaz.” He also allegedly told police that he did not have a driver’s license. So the vehicle was towed and impounded and several violations were issued, said Cannella.
Cannella said that on Oct. 16 they were contacted by the Union City Police Department because they believed that the blue Honda Ahmad was stopped in was actually a stolen vehicle that had been reported on Oct. 8.
The print was submitted to the Automated Fingerprint Identification System.

After receiving the information, the department received news that another vehicle stolen from North Bergen, a green Honda, had been recovered by New York City Police. The department was able to obtain a partial latent fingerprint, said Cannella.
The print was submitted to the Automated Fingerprint Identification System, which came back on Nov. 15 as a positive match to Ahmad.
By then, Ahmad had been arrested from an unrelated incident in West New York, and was located at the Hudson County Jail when police were granted a warrant for his arrest on Nov. 16. Cannella said that he was arrested on Nov. 22.
Alleged drunk disturbance
Robert Elliott, 51, of Newkirk Avenue in North Bergen was arrested Nov. 18 and charged with lewdness, harassment, and disorderly conduct before being released on a summons.
Cannella said that police were called to the North Bergen Housing Authority around 5:25 p.m. by a female who claimed that Elliott was “…yelling and screaming obscenities at her while intoxicated,” said Cannella.
Cannella said that the victim had at first called the housing authority security, who attempted to photograph Elliott. When this happened, Elliott allegedly unzipped his pants.
“Shortly thereafter the North Bergen Police Department did arrive on the scene [and he] [allegedly] continued to be more and more belligerent, now cursing at the police officers,” said Cannella.
When police said he was under arrest and asked him to put his hands behind his back, he allegedly refused, said Cannella. Police were eventually able to transport him to headquarters, where they processed him, and then transported him to Palisades Medical Center, where he was treated for detox.
