Mary J. Donohoe School Reunion declared a success
Judy Delaney Timko said the Mary J. Donohoe and Friends Reunion and Fundraiser, held on Sept. 25, was much more than a reunion.
“I have to say that in the end, planning the MJD reunion was so rewarding. The night was so emotional and fun beyond words,” she said. “Just to see the friends and teachers from my school days was amazing. The teachers that attended really made it that much more special. It was those very teachers that started the molding process and planted the seed of success in every one of us. “
She said she hadn’t known when first proposing the reunion that this was the first in the history of the school.
Mary J. Donohoe opened its doors in 1920.
“That’s amazing. This school has had thousands of children walk through its doors over the years, and I am proud to have been a Mary J. Donohoe student.”
Firefighters rescue worker from water
The Bayonne Fire Department rescued a worker who fell into New York Harbor near the Lower Hook Road industrial area on Nov. 9.
According to Fire Chief Greg Rogers, KT Marine personnel were replacing existing bulkhead when a 59-year-old man fell from the plank bridging the pier with a floating barge just before 4 p.m.
“The barge was reportedly rocked by a wave, knocking off the securing clamp, causing the victim to fall and land partly in the water and partly on to a floating platform,” Rogers said. “When rescue workers arrived, they found the victim on top of the floating platform, along with another worker who reportedly jumped into the water to assist the victim.”
Firefighters lowered a ladder from the barge to the floating platform, descended, and stabilized the victim along with EMS workers. The victim was then secured to a rescue basket, and hauled by ropes to safety. The victim was shivering from coldwater exposure, and complained of neck and head pain.
The Fire Department deployed the rescue boat and land-based rescue crews involving about 12 firefighters. The victim was reportedly transported to Jersey City Medical Center. Firefighters were on the scene for approximately 45 minutes.
Mayor evening office hours suspended on Nov. 23
The Office of the Mayor announced that Mayor Mark A. Smith’s Tuesday evening office hours will be suspended on Tuesday, Nov. 23. The mayor’s Tuesday evening office hours will resume on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 5:30 p.m.
Bayonne Scouts plan city-wide food drive
On Saturday, Nov. 20, Bayonne Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will hold their annual “Scouting for Food” collection drive. Residents are asked to place their non-perishable food items in a bag and leave them outside their front door before 9 a.m. Donations should be clearly visible from the street since scouts are not allowed to enter any private homes or apartment buildings. Scouts from Bayonne Troops, Packs and Crews will fan out across the community to collect food and deliver the donations to their parish food pantry. Allow the Scouts enough time to complete their rounds. Any food not picked up by noon should be phoned into the Scouting for Food Hotline at (201) 339-1845, where arrangements can be made for a special pick-up. Scouts from St. Andrew and St. Mary, Assumption, Mt. Carmel, St. Henry, and St. Vincent parishes are participating in this year’s event. Donate non-perishable food only – no expired or close to expiration items, and no glass containers. Any monetary donations should be made directly to your parish.
Fred Creswick, district commissioner for the Hudson-Liberty unit of the Boy Scouts of America thanked the community for their support.
“Every year, the Scouts of Bayonne come together to make Scouting for Food a huge success. The community’s generous donations are used to replenish Bayonne’s food pantries in time for the holidays,” said Creswick. “This year, in these uncertain economic times, the food pantries need our help more than ever.”

Windmill Alliance seeks donations for the holidays
Windmill Alliance is seeking donations to help feed 50 or more families on Thanksgiving. Donations of non-perishable food, paper products, plastic cups, bottled water, juice and juice boxes, canned vegetables and potatoes, instant potatoes, checks or gift cards, pies or cookies, and other items are needed. Donations can be brought to Windmill Alliance Inc., 141 Broadway.
