Veterans’ Day ceremonies to be held at City Hall

John Nicaretta and Louis Pittner, co-grand marshals for the 2011 Memorial Day Parade, will take part in their new roles at Veterans’ Day ceremonies in City Hall on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
The Catholic War Veterans Our Lady of Assumption Post 1612 will be the lead post for the 2011 parade. This is the 94th Memorial Day Parade held in Bayonne.
Nicaretta served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War and was discharged as a sergeant. He is an active member of the Catholic War Vets and for years served as chairman of their annual blood drive.
Pittner served in U.S. Army military intelligence from 1943 to 1946 in Europe during World War II. Discharged a sergeant, he is a long time commander of the Catholic War Veterans.

HFA names new principal

Mary Tremitiedi, a retired administrative assistant to the superintendent of Hoboken schools and former principal, has been named the new principal to Bayonne’s Holy Family Academy.
The school, which was saved from closing two years ago by a group that included alumni, has been in search of a new principal for the last six months.
“My hope was to have a permanent principal in place by the beginning of this school year,” said Noel Ruane, who took over as interim principal of Holy Family Academy last spring. “But I wasn’t going to step down until we found a qualified candidate who had the intellectual, administrative and spiritual stamina to do the job. I found that person in Mary C. Tremitiedi.”
Principal Tremitiedi comes with an impressive 38 years of experience in education, Ruane said. She spent her first 13 years as a teacher, followed by 10 years as a vice principal and then another five years as principal.
For the past 10 years, Tremitiedi acted as Central Office administrator, where she had a number of responsibilities, including stints as interim principal for both the 12th grade house at Hoboken High School and Brandt Middle School. It should also be noted that Tremitiedi is a product of Catholic education herself. She attended Our Lady of Grace Elementary School in Hoboken and St. Michael’s High School in Union City.
Starting her teaching career in 1971, she has taught in Wallace and Connor’s Schools in Hoboken. In 1985, she was promoted to vice principal and was assigned to Salvatore Calabro and later to A.J. Demarest Elementary School. Mary also was the president of the Hoboken Teachers Union (NJEA) for 10 years, and also served several terms as president the Hoboken Administrators unit.

Sires granted another term in 13th Congressional District

On Nov.2, Albio Sires, the incumbent congressman for the 13th District, won another term in office.
Within just a couple of hours of the polls closing, Sires was reported as the winner in Hudson, Essex, Middlesex, and Union counties, achieving an average of over 75 percent of the vote between the four counties.
Sires, who has been in office since 2006, faced three challengers to maintain his seat in Congress this year, including Republican challenger Henrietta Dwyer, who earned an average of 21 percent of the vote. Third party challengers Anthony Zanowic and Maximo Gomez Nacer received 2 percent or less in each county.
The 13th Congressional District covers four counties, including a majority of Hudson County municipalities like Guttenberg, Hoboken, Union City, Weehawken, and West New York, as well as parts of Bayonne, Jersey City, and North Bergen.

Quick Chek and IMTT donate to local sportsprograms

Bayonne Quick Chek representatives presented a donation of $2,187 to members of the Bayonne Little League. The donation represents $0.25 for every sub, sandwich and wrap sold during the store’s first 30 days in operation following its recent grand opening celebration. The store is located at 20-38 East 53rd St.
Meanwhile, the city council is expected to vote at its Nov. 10 meeting to authorize an agreement with International Matex Tank Terminals (IMTT) for funding for improvements to the Pony League baseball field (new bleachers, lights, improved infield, and conversion to a multi-facet field) and to authorize a Park Maintenance Agreement with the Bayonne Little League for the operation and maintenance of any and all improvements installed.
