Peer around a corner or look up at a balcony landing and it’s clear to see, the spirit of Halloween is all around.
Residents in Union City and West New York alike have been getting into the ‘spirit’ of things by decorating whatever spaces they call their own as the season of costumes, haunting, tricks, and treats is upon the neighborhood.
Even stores along Bergenline Avenue have gotten into the spirit of spookiness by decorating their storefronts with jack o’ lanterns and donning masks on their mannequins.
Parents are also brushing up on tips to keep their kids safe as they head to the streets for treats (see sidebar) and several local towns held community events which can provide an alternative to trick-or-treating.
Union City held a Halloween Costume Party and special Halloween Show by Rosario & Her Stars for children 14 and younger on Oct. 27, awarding prizes for the most creative costumes.
And in West New York, a Halloween Ragamuffin Parade and Costume Contest (open to West New York residents of all ages) was planned for Oct. 29 with the parade beginning at 4 p.m. on the steps of the Municipal Building, 428 60th St. and the contest to subsequently be held at West New York Middle School, 201 57th St.
The Reporter wishes a safe, happy Halloween to all!

Some safety tips for “trick-or-treating”
• Plan your route ahead of time
• Trick or treat as a group in familiar neighborhoods, accompanied by an adult
• Stay on the sidewalks and out of the streets; cross only at intersections and designated crosswalks; follow traffic signals
• Walk with your head up and be aware of your surroundings
• Don’t stop at dark houses or cut across backyards or alleyways
• Don’t approach unfamiliar pets or animals
• Don’t enter homes or apartment buildings without the supervision of a parent or designated adult
• Don’t accept rides from strangers
• Avoid candy that has loose wrappings, is unwrapped, has puncture holes, or is homemade; don’t eat any candy until it’s been inspected by a parent or guardian
• Report any suspicious or criminal activity to an adult or the police
• Adults are reminded to play it safe too – keep an eye out for kids darting between parked cars and walking along roadways, medians, and curbs
