Sires calls for FCC action on Cable Television and Fox News Corporation dispute

Rep. Albio Sires (D – 13th) has called for federal intervention in the standoff between Cablevision and News Corp./Fox over how much the cable company must pay for News Corp.’s content.
“I am deeply disappointed that today my constituents can no longer see Fox 5 and MY9 television channels on their cable programming. As we are all aware, because of a dispute between cable television and Fox News Corporation, cable viewers are no longer able to watch their programs on these channels.
“It is time for the Federal Communications Commission to get involved in this dispute by bringing both parties together through binding arbitration. As the country’s leading consumer protection agency, only the Federal Communications Commission can ensure that my constituents can continue to enjoy the programs they are accustomed to viewing.”

HCCC gets $2.97 million federal grant

The US Department of Education has awarded a $2.97 million grant to Hudson County Community College (HCCC). The college was selected for the award from the Title V — Hispanic-Serving Institutions competitive grants program titled “Building a 21st Century Community College.”
Hudson County Community College President Dr. Glen Gabert said the funding — which will be provided over a five-year period — will be dedicated to two major initiatives: first, expanding access and increasing student success and persistence through the establishment of a Center for Distance Education; and second, strengthening the capacity of the college’s mathematics and technology programs.
“The college has been making huge strides in improving our technologies and making it more convenient for everyone to take courses via distance learning. Thanks to this grant, we will be able to make a giant leap forward in this area and we will also be able to enhance our studies in the Health, Science and Technology Division. We are grateful to Sen. Robert Menendez and Congressman Albio Sires for championing the College for this award,” Dr. Gabert said.
