Bedbugs found in several JC public schools; Board of Ed member upset

JERSEY CITY – Jersey City school board member Sterling Waterman confirmed on Monday that bedbugs have been found in at least three public schools in recent weeks.
Waterman said he first found out about a bedbug discovered last week at P.S. 16 on Washington Street, and has since been informed by school district officials that bedbugs were discovered at P.S. 8 on Franklin Street and P.S. 22 on Van Horne Street.
Waterman said he is “angry” at school officials for not informing him or other school board members about the problem at P.S. 16, but instead had to hear from people associated with the school. Waterman had previously been the parent-teacher council president at School 16.
“This is unacceptable that parents and children were not notified immediately about the problem in their school,” Waterman said.
He said he planned to bring up the bedbug issue and the school district’s communication policy at Board of Education committee meetings this week. – RK
