UNION CITY – The Hudson County Prosecutors Office announced on Monday that they have arrested 46-year-old Jorge Torres of Union City in connection with the strangling of another Union City resident that allegedly took place over the weekend at Torres’ apartment.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio, in the early hours of Saturday morning, Torres allegedly killed Edwin Acosta, 34, of 9th Street, by manual strangulation.
Torres reported finding the body in the apartment on the 3900 block of Palisade Avenue on Saturday morning, according to the prosecutor.
“We don’t have a motive established,” said DeFazio. “But the victim and the defendant were familiar with one another.”
DeFazio said that investigators do not believe anybody else was present in the apartment at the time the two men were socializing late Friday night into early Saturday morning.
Torres has been charged with murder and will have his first appearance in court today.
In addition to the alleged strangulation of Acosta, there were at least two other violent incidents reported over the weekend in Union City and West New York.
In West New York, a 16-year old was stabbed during an incident on Friday night that West New York Police Director Albert Bringa said is still under investigation.
And in Union City early Sunday morning, two young men were sent to the hospital after a fight broke out at a bar on Bergenline Avenue near 44th Street.
According to published reports, a 23-year-old West New York man was stabbed in the lower right side of his back and a 26-year-old man, also from West New York, was beaten in the face and head.
Neither of the injuries were considered to be life threatening, according to reports, and three young men (one from West New York, one from Union City, and one from Jersey City) were arrested and charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and unlawful possession of a weapon. – Lana Rose Diaz
