Housing Authority receives grant for anti-gang and anti-drug initiatives
The U.S. Department of Justice recently awarded the Jersey City Housing Authority (JCHA) a grant of $300,000 to administer a Drug Elimination Program at its public housing sites, pursuant to a Congressional appropriation in the federal budget.
The JCHA intends to target anti-gang initiatives with this funding, including the provision of site-based off-duty police officers at the family public housing sites and the creation of a program to involve site-based officers in establishing chess clubs for adolescents to provide additional constructive leisure activities for at-risk teens. This will also provide a forum for positive interaction between law enforcement and public housing residents.
Programs like this are meant to foster the participation of teens in an activity that stimulate thinking, develops analytical and decision-making skills while strengthening mental clarity, fortitude, stability, and overall health as well as non-threatening, non-confrontational setting between teens and police officers.
