Sibling of Hoboken woman in Peace Corps needs your help
Ariel Simons, the 24-year-old sister of Hoboken resident Rachel Simons, is currently serving in the Peace Corps and living in Lesotho, an impoverished country within the territory of South Africa.
Simons has made a two-year commitment to the cause, and currently works in a school teaching young people basic reading and writing skills, as well as promoting awareness issues such as malnutrition, sex education, and safe drinking water. She is starting a project to create the first-ever Moyeni High School Library in Quthing, Lesotho, Africa.
Family members are supporting the project from the United States by gathering 1,000 books by Nov. 15 and raising $500 to ship the books to Lesotho for the new library. The family is collecting used/new Kindergarten through 6th grade books, such as picture, reference, and early readers books.

United Synagogue of Hoboken Mitzvah Day set for Oct. 10
The United Synagogue of Hoboken is proud to announce Mitzvah Day 2010, which will take place on Sunday, Oct. 10.
Volunteers from the synagogue community will participate in their choice of 10 activities that serve a variety of people, including children, seniors, the disabled, people serving overseas in the military, and those in need of blood donations, among others.
The annual event, which began in 2005, is an opportunity for the USH congregation – adults and children of all ages – to come together and serve the greater community on a mass scale. Part of the goal is to give members a positive experience with a volunteer opportunity they may be interested in continuing regularly throughout the year. The day is also an opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills, have fun, and make a significant contribution to our surrounding community.
All projects begin at 11 a.m., and the day culminates at 4 p.m. with dessert and coffee at the synagogue, 115 Park Ave.

The 30th Annual Artists Studio Tour on Nov. 6 and 7
On Saturday, Nov. 6 and Sunday, Nov. 7, from noon until 6 p.m., Mayor Dawn Zimmer, The City of Hoboken, The Hudson Reporter, and the Hudson County Division of Cultural & Heritage Affairs will present The Hoboken 30th Annual Artists Studio Tour, a free self-guided walking tour of artists’ studios, galleries, and community exhibition spaces. The tour takes place all throughout Hoboken, at spots including The Monroe Center.
There is still time to get involved. They are looking for artists, photographers, sculptors, musicians, art students, and more. You don’t need a studio to participate. There will be lots of community spaces to exhibit or perform in. If you are a local business, there are opportunities for your involvement as well. Call (201) 420-2207 to get an application.
Get vaccinated for free
The City of Hoboken, in conjunction with the Hoboken University Medical Center, announces that it will provide free seasonal flu vaccines to adult Hoboken residents.
Senior citizens can receive the vaccine on Oct. 12 and 13 in the community room of each residential building:

On Thursday, Oct. 14, vaccines will be administered to adult Hoboken residents at Hoboken University Medical Center’s Assumption Hall.

ZYLO kicks off a Prix-Fixed Mommy & Me Lunch series
ZYLO is partnering with local Hoboken charity, Project Play to help benefit, rehab, and save Church Square Park, a park where the equipment is nearly inhabitable for children today. On Sept. 29, they will launch this effort with a Stroller Stampede, a walk from Church Square Park to ZYLO Restaurant. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Upon arrival to ZYLO parents will be given a chance to relax and enjoy a delectable three-course prix-fixed meal and a momosa (the restaurant’s take on Mimosa created just for moms), while their little ones delight in new culinary creations. Bliss Spa will be on hand to provide free hand massages, and gift bags filled with goodies.
The event costs $18 and half of all proceeds will benefit Project Play. ZYLO will be offer this Mommy & Me Prix-Fixed lunch menu on Mondays throughout the month of October from 11 a.m. -2 p.m for $18, and fifty percent of all proceeds will also go to Project Play.
