City Council approves $10.6 million contract for construction of police station

JERSEY CITY — The City Council at its Wednesday meeting voted for a resolution awarding a $10.6 million contract for the construction of the new West District Police Station.
The contract was awarded to the Arco Construction Group, based in Elizabeth.
The new station would be built about about two blocks away from the old station located on Communipaw Avenue.
The vote was 7-1 in favor with City Councilman Steven Fulop voting against the contract, saying it it should not be awarded at a time with the city is doing furloughs of employees and is facing an $80 million budget deficit.
City Councilman Viola Richardson was one of the seven who voted for the contract. Richardson, a former police officer who once worked in the West District, disagreed with Fulop citing how the old station needed to be replaced. – RK
