HOBOKEN BRIEFS

Despite request, 9/15 council meeting will remain at City Hall

The Hoboken City Council meeting will remain in the council chambers at City Hall despite a request from Hoboken PBA President Vince Lombardi to move the meeting to a location which would accommodate up to 500 people.
“We have received a request that our next council meeting be held in a venue to accommodate up to 500 people. While it is appropriate and important that we listen to the public, we must balance the need to hear from members of the public against the need to conduct the city’s business,” said Council President Carol Marsh, in a statement released on Friday.
Earlier in the week, Lombardi proposed the Wallace Primary School auditorium/gymnasium as a possible location for the meeting.
The council will provide an overflow room in city hall during the meeting.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Report: Former councilman’s lawsuit dismissed

A civil lawsuit filed by former Hoboken Councilman Chris Campos against a New York City police officer and Hoboken police officer has been dismissed in the Southern District Court of New York, according to a report on NJ.com.
Campos was arrested in New York on Jan. 20, 2007, and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and pleaded guilty to the crime.
However, before placing Campos under arrest, a police officer in New York City called the Hoboken police department to let them know that a city councilman was about to be arrested, asking what they should do. Reports have referred to this as a “courtesy call.”
The response from the Hoboken police department was to enforce the law.
Campos’ lawsuit against the Hoboken police officer and New York police officer claimed there was a conspiracy against him, which ultimately ended his political career.
The suit was dismissed on Aug. 12.

Local assemblyman joins effort to protect jobs and discourage outsourcing

Assemblymen Ruben J. Ramos, Jr. (D-Hudson) and Nelson Albano (D-Cape May/Atlantic/Cumberland) are pushing legislation to protect jobs at home and discourage the outsourcing of American jobs to other countries with bill A998, which would prohibit business entities from eligibility for state contracts or state grants if the business eliminates jobs performed by its employees in the United States and assigns those functions to workers in a foreign nation.
“Now more than ever we need to be conscious of the businesses New Jersey invests in,” said Ramos in a released statement.” We should be using every resource at our disposal to help retain and attract jobs to our country, and our state in particular.”
Prior to receiving any state contract or grant, a business entity will be required to certify, in writing to the state agency awarding the contract or grant, that it is not prohibited by the bill’s provisions from entering into the contract or receiving the grant, and must agree that during the contract or grant it will not engage in conduct that would make it ineligible.
The proposed bill also prohibits state funds or funds under the custody or control of the state from being invested in the securities of ineligible businesses.
The measure is currently awaiting a hearing before the Assembly State Government Committee.
