Dear Editor:
The Dante Alighieri Society would like to extend a warm thank you to Ward C Councilwoman Nidia Lopez. She championed our efforts to rename a portion of Summit Avenue – between Pavonia Avenue and Five Corners – “Dante Alighieri Way.” The motion passed the Council, and the dedication will take place in October – to coincide with the Society’s annual “Man of the Year” ceremony. The Dante Alighieri Society is an integral part of Jersey City’s rich history. It has been active in Jersey City since 1909. During the 101 years of its existence, the Dante Alighieri Society focused its activities to “promote the study of the Italian language and culture . . . a purpose independent of political ideologies, national or ethnic origins or religious beliefs . . . the Society is the free association of people – not just Italians – but all people everywhere who are united by their love for the Italian language and culture and the spirit of universal humanism that these represent.” Since its establishment in the early part of the 20th century, The Dante Alighieri Society has served the people of Jersey City by rendering charitable assistance, diffusing Italian literature, culture, and traditions through a variety of diverse programs and media, presenting awards and scholarships, and assisting Italian immigrants to become responsible citizens. The Dante Alighieri Society continues to foster a spirit of understanding among all people through the arts and other cultural activities. Dante Alighieri traveled along a path that ultimately led to enhanced awareness, understanding, and illumination. Perhaps “Dante Alighieri Way” will serve as a reminder that we should follow our own unique paths to achieve greater enlightenment.
