STATEWIDE —The next 24-48 hours will determine how great a threat Hurricane Earl poses to the New York metropolitan area, according to various sources.
Hurricane Earl remains a major hurricane this morning, as it moves northwest at about 16 miles per hour. The national Hurricane Center has revised their projected path slightly to the west since yesterday, indicating that the Outer Banks of NC may experience strong hurricane force winds.
The latest predictions are that a high pressure system moving eastward will keep Hurricane Earl offshore so that it will pass southeast of Long Island from Thursday night to Friday night. Rain is forecast for the Hudson County area, possibly as early as Friday morning, and continuing all day, followed by a cold front offering relief from this week’s mid-90 degree temperatures.
If you head to the beach this weekend, be warned riptides and heavy swells from the residual effects of the storm may making swimming hazardous.
