HOBOKEN — The municipal budget for July 1-Dec. 31, which the Hoboken City Council plans to introduce this Wednesday, will include a 5 percent tax decrease in the municipal portion, Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer said this past week.
Councilman Michael Lenz said that the city’s surplus funds may be used to help with tax relief, contradicting earlier comments of Zimmer allies who said they would not use any of the surplus for tax relief.
Councilwoman Beth Mason has repeatedly called on the city to use that surplus to return more of the taxpayers’ money.
The amount of the decrease may not seem enough after taxes were hiked almost 50 percent two years ago.
