Bayonne sewer repair to commence on Monday

BAYONNE — Mayor Mark Smith and 3rd Ward Council Member Ray Greaves announced that the long awaited sewer repair at East 45th Street and Avenue E will commence on Monday, Aug. 23. An antiquated brick sewer suffered a partial collapse underneath the road surface. Further inspection revealed that the old sewer main some 20 feet below the road surface has been compromised.
Engineers for the Bayonne Municipal Utilities Authority determined that the least disruptive, least costly method of repair would involve using a trenchless technology method where a small excavation could be made and a new sewer could be inserted under ground. Channelline, a sewer rehabilitation method used by the authority in the past, was selected as the preferred method of repair and a project was commissioned and let out for bid. The Channelline system uses a glass reinforced plastic pipe custom fabricated for the damaged sewer. The alternative would have been excavating Avenue E down to 20 feet from 46th to 45th streets.
The successful bidder on the job was Spiniello and Company of Livingston, NJ at $155,655. The work is expected to take about four weeks to complete.
