NORTH BERGEN BRIEFS

Changes in North Bergen budget meeting dates

As noted in last week’s cover story, North Bergen introduced its $79.2 million budget last week, with a potential tax rise of 3.9 percent.
The final budget will be passed in September, but residents can comment or give suggestions before then.
A few of the meeting dates have been changed from the original story. Tax bills for this quarter have been sent out on Aug. 9 and are due by Sept. 7, as opposed to the Sept. 10 date in the story.
Also, the budget will be up for a public hearing at their Sept. 8 meeting, not the upcoming Aug. 25 meeting.
These changes have already been made on the online version of the story.

Shock jock Hal Turner faces third trial

Harold “Hal” Turner of North Bergen is now facing his third federal trial in Brooklyn, after being accused last year of making a statement that threatened the lives of three federal judges in Chicago.
On his website, Turner, a blogger and shock jock, had published the names and addresses of three judges who had opposed lifting a Chicago gun ban.
Turner has maintained that the FBI hired him in the hopes of gathering information about white extremists in the country and that his posts were meant to “ratchet up the rhetoric” to get more info from his readers.
Turner’s first two trials, held in December 2009 and March 2010, were both declared mistrials. The three judges are slated testify again at this trial. Turner gave his testimony on Wednesday.

Suggested lawn-watering restrictions

Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise and United Water New Jersey officials are asking the company’s customers in six North Hudson County towns to conserve water due to low water storage levels. The most effective way to do this is to water lawns only between the hours of 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., the county said.
The request applies to the following North Hudson communities: Guttenberg, North Bergen, Secaucus, Union City, Weehawken, and West New York.
The company also advised customers not to open fire hydrants. Residents are asked to report open fire hydrants to the local police department. They can also call United Water’s 24 hour emergency department at (201) 487-0011.
