Hudson County Organization Receives Grant Funding for Breast Health Program

The North Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded grant funding to two Hudson County organizations to provide breast health services to medically underserved and uninsured populations.

Hudson Perinatal Consortium, Inc.’s Hudson Breast Health Initiative is a community education program in Hudson County for underinsured and uninsured women focusing on early detection. The Komen grant will support a Breast Health Educator to provide vital education programs and referrals for breast exams and mammograms for at-risk women. Metropolitan Family Health Network, Inc’s Breast Cancer Education and Screening Program provides breast cancer outreach and screening services for women in Jersey City, specifically African American women. The Komen grant will support outreach, education and free mammograms and ultrasounds to women 39 years of age and under who are not eligible for the New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection Program (NJCEED ). Seventy-five percent of net funds raised by the Affiliate ($12.2 million since inception in 1997) stays within its service region for breast health education, screening, and treatment programs. The remaining twenty-five percent ($5.4 million since 1997) is directed to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Grants Program.

Nancy Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure®, the organization has invested more than $1 billion to fulfill its promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer.
