JERSEY CITY AND BAYONNE — Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said on Friday that a 20-year-old Bayonne man was sentenced that morning to 364 days in jail for striking a pedestrian in June of last year after running a red light on a downtown Jersey City street.
DeFazio said Anthony Pane also received two years probation and has to perform 100 hours of community service under a plea deal. He drove the car June 13, 2009 that hit Ricardo Torres as Torres was walking across Marin Boulevard near Sixth Street. Pane allegedly also drove away from the scene of the incident.
Torres ended up in a coma for a month and endured several surgeries.
DeFazio said that Pane would have faced five years imprisonment for the more serious charge of aggravated assault, but Torres agreed for that charge to be dropped.
“The victim deemed that the resolution was acceptable,” DeFazio said. “It was a fair disposition of the case.”
DeFazio said Pane was given a surrender date at the end of the month. Pane is currently free on $50,000 bail but DeFazio said he is not considered a risk to flee. – RK
