JERSEY CITY – The developer of the Liberty National Golf Course near Liberty State Park in Jersey City is looking to build a yacht marina as part of the exclusive-membership course.
But park advocates have concerns about the proposed marina.
Liberty National, built by Massachusetts businessman Paul Fireman (former Reebok CEO), opened in 2007 and boasts a membership that includes NY Giants quarterback Eli Manning and pro golfer Phil Mickelson.
The residential arm of the golf course development company, WA Residential Urban Renewal LLC, put in an application with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers earlier this month for a permit to build the 22-slip Liberty National Marina near the course. The Army Corps of Engineers issued a July 9 public notice for comments from the public to gauge the environment impact of the project.
Among those concerned about the project are the Friends of Liberty State Park (FOLSP), the advocacy group for the preservation of the park, along with other environmental groups and local residents.
FOLSP has come out against the project as indicated in their July 15 letter to the Army Corps of Engineers, saying the proposed marina would be built too close to the park’s current boat launch and would cut down on the space needed by those who use the boat launch.
The FOLSP is calling for an open public hearing on the proposed marina.
