Menendez and U.S Interior Secretary Salazar speaking Monday on economic recovery projects at Ellis Island

JERSEY CITY AND BEYOND – Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) will hold a press event Monday afternoon at Ellis Island – part of which is located with Jersey City’s borders – to announce new projects under the President’s economic recovery plan, according to an announcement by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
The announcement also states, that the projects “will create jobs and stimulate the economy while preserving the historic site.” However, no details were given on what those projects will entail.
Ellis Island, a 27.5-acre island with 24 located within New Jersey borders, was the first stop for immigrants on their way to America from 1892 to 1954.
Last May, the Department of the Interior announced that $25 million in stimulus money from Pres. Barack Obama’s economic recovery plan would be allotted for refurbishing the Baggage and Dormitory Building and repair 2,000 feet of the island’s crumbling seawall. – RK
