BAYONNE — Mayor Mark Smith has announced the opening of several cooling centers around Bayonne to assist people during the impending heat wave. Starting Monday at 9 a.m., residents were welcome to go to Fourth Street Senior Center or 57th Street Senior Center. The centers are open and air conditioned.
Non-ambulatory persons wishing to avail themselves of the cooling centers are welcome to contact McCabe Ambulance at 201-858-1200 for free transportation to the cooling centers.
Smith advised families to check in on elderly and at risk relatives, friends and neighbors to make sure they are safe and comfortable. During the heat wave people are advised to take it easy, drink plenty of fluids to remain hydrated and cease all strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day.
Heat exhaustion symptoms and warning signs include: heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting and fainting. Left untreated, heat exhaustion can easily advance to heat stroke.
Smith urges people to keep an eye out for these symptoms and arrange for medical assistance should the need arise. Temperatures are expected to remain in the 90s until at least Thursday, July 8.
