Leo Smith tapped to replace Doll as BA of school district

Vice Principal Leo Smith, brother of Mayor Mark Smith, was named as the new business administrator for the Bayonne School District at a meeting on June 24. Smith will take over for Doll starting on July 1 at a salary of $157,778 per year.

Burglar found in Avenue B home

Two women residing at 251 Avenue B on June 26 did not know they had a burglar in the house until the police knocked on the door and asked if the building could be searched.
According to a police spokesperson, the police pursued a suspect from 101 51st Street after seeing the man wearing dark clothes and black gloves allegedly breaking into that building. The figure ran into the backyard and after a thorough search, police believed he must have entered one of the buildings connected to that block. A search discovered Kenneth Lynch, 47, of Bayonne, on the third floor. Police said Lynch tried to escape out the balcony and allegedly resisted arrest when police tried to cuff him.
He has been charged with attempted burglary, burglary, and resisting arrest. He also had outstanding unpaid fines from Asbury Park.

PA takes steps in regards to Bayonne Bridge

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced this week that it is fast-tracking a review of environmental issues to help speed modifications or the replacement of the Bayonne Bridge, which is too low to accommodate larger vessels anticipated at the port after the Panama Canal widening is completed by mid-decade. Both Governor Christopher Christie and the Port Authority are committed to finding a cost-effective solution to fixing the Bayonne Bridge to ensure the long-term health of ports Newark and Elizabeth and Howland Hook on Staten Island.
“This effort to expand the region’s port facilities is the latest evidence of how well the port region has been served these past nine decades. When combined with our firm commitment to addressing the Bayonne Bridge clearance issue and protecting Port Elizabeth and Port Newark, I can say with certainty that the Port Authority is passionately pursuing its mission,” said Bill Baroni, the Port Authority’s deputy executive director.

Simpson Baber to be featured at baseball’s All Star Game

The Simpson Baber Foundation will be the featured charity of the New York Mets during the upcoming All Stars Baseball Game on July 13 in Angel Stadium. This is the result of people voting for the charity in a competition put on “People Magazine” and the Fox Network.
Motivated by her own experience as the parent of an autistic child, Marguerite Baber created The Simpson-Baber Foundation in 1995. Since its inception, it has funded over $1,500,000 in direct educational, social, and recreational opportunities to the autism community. She also created the Busy Bee Program in 2002, an early-intervention program recognized as being effective in helping autistic children to maximize their developmental and educational potential.
“I’d like to thank everyone who voted for us. I’m overwhelmed by the support,” Baber said. “This is such an honor for the foundation and for all of the people who are working hard to make a difference in the lives of others.”
