Voters pick first and third council seats

Voters were scheduled to go to the polls on Tuesday, June 15 to decide who will represent the 1st and 3rd wards in two runoff elections from May 11.
Agnes Gillespie, supported by Mayor Mark Smith, was facing off against Thomas Cotter, a former machinist, for the 1st Ward council seat.
Smith-backed Ray Greaves, a transit union official, is seeking to unseat incumbent Councilman Gary La Pelusa in the 3rd Ward.

Maidenform to become residential

The Bayonne Planning Board voted unanimously June 8 to allow the former Maidenform buildings at 142 to 180 Avenue E to be redeveloped as a residential building.
The complex will offer 99 units from studios to three-bedrooms, and will include artist workplaces.

Animal control amendments to be introduced

The City Council is expected to introduce amendments to its animal control ordinance at the June 23 meeting. The changes would set up a provision that would authorize certain people to feed and care for feral cats, and require them to trap them for spaying and neutering.

Board of Education trustees to be appointed

Mayor Mark Smith is expected to reappoint William Lawson and Ava Mitchell to the Board of Education as trustees within the next week and to appoint Agnes Rymer to fill a vacant seat for a three-year terms expiring in May, 2013.

Ivy League-bound

Sean Jahanfar of Bayonne and a graduating student from Hudson County Schools of Technology has been accepted to Cornell University. She is one of eight seniors from the school who will be heading to Ivy League schools next year, said Dr. Joseph Giammarella, Director of High Tech and Academy of Architectural & Contemporary Themes (AACT).
The other students include Jersey City residents Riana Balahadia, Anna Blazejowskyj, and Sameer Chauhan, who have been accepted to Harvard, Yale, and U Penn, respectively; Erika Rios of Harrison has been accepted to Princeton; Secaucus residents Tomas Paneque and Neil Parekh have been accepted to Columbia and Cornell, respectively; and Stephanie Guzman of West New York received an acceptance letter from Cornell.
“Our two high schools contain many of the finest students in the county, state or the entire nation,” said HCST Superintendent Frank Gargiulo. “Thanks to the hard work these students and their teachers have put in, they will be continuing their education at some of the finest colleges in the country, and I could not be prouder of them.”
“Approximately 50 percent of the graduating class will attend colleges [that] are considered highly competitive,” noted Vincent Nardiello, High Tech’s senior guidance counselor.

Golf outing for HFA

Holy Family Academy will hold its 11th Annual Sister Joan O’Donnell Memorial Golf Outing on Monday, July 12 at Snueagles Golf Course, Fort Monmouth, N.J.
Joe Tagliareni, proprietor of J & J Printing, his honorary chairman. The golf outing will begin with a putting contest, followed by a chef’s lunch and later a dinner buffet with awards which include two hour open bar and raffles. The proceeds will support a variety of programs at HFA including financial aid, academic programs, and extracurricular activities.
