Man with empty baby carriage charged with theft

BAYONNE — A woman approached police officers patrolling the Hudson Bergen Light Rail line at about 11 a.m. on June 12 saying that her purse was missing. Based on a description of the man she said was sitting next to her on the train, the police said they stopped Lenard Wiggins, 24, of Jersey City, whom they say was pushing an empty baby carriage over the foot bridge from the 45th Street Light Rail station. Officers said they saw the strap of the purse sticking out from the storage compartment of the carriage, and upon inspection, it turned out to be the woman’s purse, which contained about $200 in cash, credit cards, and other items.
Wiggins was charged with theft. A background search, police said, discovered two outstanding warrants for $6,000 in unpaid fines to Bayonne Municipal Court, and about $2,500 in unpaid fines to Jersey City Municipal Court, police said. Wiggins was sent to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny.
