Guttenberg resident a finalist for ‘People All-Stars’
Major League Baseball and People Magazine have announced the three finalists of the 2010 “People All-Stars Among Us” campaign, including a local woman. The program began last year as a way to recognize individuals who donate their time to serving their communities.

Luis Iza, 57, of Guttenberg, along with Bayonne resident Marguerite Baber, 50, and Hector Algarroba, 56, of Astoria, Queens, are finalists.
Iza began Operation Exodus Inner City for Latino children in Washington Heights as a place for students to gain academic help and support for staying out of gangs. Over the last 20 years, it has created after-school, mentoring, summer, parent and school-placement programs to help children succeed.
Baber founded the Simpson-Baber Foundation in 1995, motivated by her own autistic child, to raise funds and support for the autism community. It has raised $1.5 million since then. In 2002, she began the Busy Bee Program, an early intervention initiative that maximizes students’ educational potential.
The finalists were selected under the auspices of the N.Y. Mets; there are a total of 90 finalists, with three per MLB club. They were selected from thousands of online submissions by fans across North America.
The final winner will be featured in People during the week of the All-Star Game on July 13, a sporting event in Anaheim, Calif.
North Bergen to pave streets, auction condos
At the North Bergen Commissioners’ meeting on June 9, a $434,150 contract was awarded to Joseph Sanzari of Hackensack for several paving projects around town.
This year’s paving projects include: 80th Street from Kennedy Boulevard to Bergenline Avenue; 82nd Street from Grand Avenue to Tonnelle Avenue; Bergenwood Avenue from 64th Street to 67th Street and 67th Street to 70th Street; Durham Avenue from 64th Street to 70th Street; Smith Street from 64th Street to 67th Street; and Grand Avenue from 39th Street to Union Turnpike.
Through a resolution the commissioners announced they will advertise for bids to sell off several condominium units and a garage that the township received through a tax foreclosure proceeding.
The nine residential condominium units are located at 2215 Grand Ave. Bids for the units must be received on June 17 at 11 a.m. by Township Administrator Chris Pianese.
Bidding will be conducted in two phases, with the minimum bid on the whole property beginning at $730,000. The second phase bidding for individual units will begin at $80,000 per condominium and $35,000 for the garage.
Also at the meeting, construction changes were made to the Police Department’s surveillance center project. The North Bergen Surveillance Center will be located at 5930 Tonnelle Ave. in what was once the Police Athletic League facility.
D Construction of Bayonne had their total contract of $591,000 increased by $41,555.24 due to “unforeseeable” events, said officials. Floor patching will cost $12,057, while roof repairs will cost several thousand dollars. Air-conditioning units will cost $9,818.
