McDERMOTT, MARGARET MARY

A mass of Christian burial was offered June 5 at Our Lady of Grace Church in Hoboken for Margaret Mary McDermott, formerly of Jersey City. She passed away at her residence on June 2. Born in Jersey City, Margaret Mary was a graduate of the Academy of St. Aloysius and College of St. Elizabeth. She obtained a Masters of Student Personnel Service and a second Masters of School Administration and Supervision, both from Seton Hall University. During her 49 years at the Jersey City Board of Education, Miss McDermott held many positions. She was a math teacher, guidance counselor and vice principal at Dickinson High School and later became director of guidance for the district. She worked in the office of the superintendant until retiring in 2005. After retiring from the Jersey City Board of Education, she served as principal of Visitation Elementary School at St. John the Baptist for one year. She was a 1980 Democratic National Convention Delegate for Edward M. Kennedy in New York City, a member of St. Joseph’s Grammar School Board of Directors, The Jersey City Women’s Club, a Theresian, and a communicant of St. Peter’s, St. Aloysius and St. John’s Parishes in Jersey City and St. Peter and Paul and Our Lady of Grace Parishes in Hoboken. Margaret Mary was a friend of the late John Cardinal O’Connor, Cardinal Archbishop of New York. She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph P. and Margaret V. McDermott and brother Joseph P. McDermott. She is survived by a host of friends too numerous to mention. Services arranged by the McLaughlin Funeral Home, Jersey City.
